Premier's Scholarship Recipients 2011


Ciara Hamagishi, Vancouver

This fall, BCIT student Ciara Hamagishi will be studying International Business Management at the Ecole Superiure de Commerce de Toulouse in France for ten months. Ciara has had plenty of travel experience to prepare her for her time abroad – she previously spent two summers teaching English in Japan, and has tutored German, Mexican and Asian exchange students since high school.

Until June she was the vice president of public relations and marketing for the BCIT Student Association, and has worked with them as a project manager and liaison. In addition, she has been a presenter for BCIT’s Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE) at local, national and regional competitions. Using skills learned as a Business Management student, Ciara worked with SIFE helping start-up business ventures in the downtown eastside.

James Sorchy, Courtenay

James Sorchy is a student at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in the Global Studies program. To experience the drastically different culture, he will be studying for ten months at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea. James has traveled before – he has lived in Ireland and Italy and spent time backpacking through Europe (17 European countries in total) and traveling the US.

The global studies program will allow James to start a career in a field such as human security, international development, education, diplomacy, humanitarian work or law. His two years of elected work for the VIU Student’s Union and time as the student representative on the Senate will also help him enter his field. As part of the Student Union, James has held both positions of Arts and Social Sciences Representative and Director of External Relations. He has also volunteered with the Global Studies Students Association, World University Service of Canada, and Model United Nations Club (as Vice President).

Radha Jain, Vancouver

Radha Jain is a third year Health Science and Kinesiology student at UBC, with the career goal of becoming a physician specializing in sports medicine and Aboriginal health. In the summer and fall of 2011, she will spend six months furthering her experience and education in her field by studying abroad at the University of Queensland in Australia. Radha has in the past traveled to India, Italy, Nepal and Greece, and will now benefit from studying Australian culture, especially Aboriginal culture and native health.

In Vancouver, Radha has been actively involved in both her school and community, offering volunteer instruction and coordination of sports activities for the Urban Native Youth Association, being an ambassador for UBC athletics in the “I’m going to UBC” program and providing research assistance at the UBC Cardiovascular Physiology Rehabilitation lab. As a team member and captain of the UBC varsity rugby team, she will benefit from the many opportunities offered to her in Australia.

Jessica Lau, Burnaby

Capilano University student Jessica Lau will travel to Amiens, France for four months this fall to study at the Picardie School of Management. Jessica has spent two years working in Hong Kong, and has studied abroad before – her three week field school to China has led to volunteer work as a past-participant preparing students for their trip.
A fourth year Business Administration student, Jessica plans to use her education in a career in program development for diversity and cultural awareness.

To help welcome international students at Capilano University, Jessica has been involved in the organization of, and participation in, orientations and in leading tours of the campus. She is also involved in the Capilano Undergraduate Business Enterprise of Students helping to enhance the value of the business program, even serving as Vice President for a term. A current advisor and past president of the Human Resources Management Association at her school, she works with the organization to provide opportunities for professional development in human resources.

Christina Jaworski, Nanaimo

Christina Jaworski is a Geography & Environmental Studies major at the University of Victoria. This fall, she will travel to Scotland to study at the University of Stirling for four months, studying the topics: Our Blue Planet, Managing Living Aquatic Resources and Conservation Management. Passionate about travel, Christina has been to Europe many times (Poland, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Czech Republic, and France) and has also been to Cuba and Mexico.

Christina is currently the Vice President of Development of Victoria’s Golden Key Society, and spends her volunteer time organizing and running various events – most recently tree planting for Woodwynn farms and a bake sale for tsunami relief in Japan. Her future plans are to work for the Federal Government of Canada in a position relating to her special interests in resource management, conservation issues and climate change.

Emma LaMorte, Victoria

Emma LaMorte is in her third year of studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) with focus on painting. This fall she will spend four months at the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London towards her bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Emma holds a previous degree in Sociology from the University of Victoria, and was able to take part in an exchange to Melbourne where she studied Aboriginal Sociology. She has also traveled to Thailand, New Zealand, Mexico and the USA, and has experienced many other cultures while hosting international students.

Emma’s recent internship at Catriona Jeffries Gallery (considered one of Canada’s most important international galleries) has given her experience in supporting international exhibitions of Vancouver based artists. She also co-curates the student run gallery at ECUAD, and is a contributing writer for the Vancouver based art publication SETUP.

Jevta Lukic, Burnaby

Jevta Lukic is in his fourth year at Simon Fraser University in the Business Administration program. He will be studying at ESCP Europe – a prestigious business school in Paris - for 4 months in the fall of 2011. Jevta has already completed one academic exchange in Hong Kong, and has also spent a summer volunteering in the Sacred Valley region of Peru implementing programs of an education fund. Growing up in war-torn Serbia has given him interest in building a career in marketing and international business in social enterprise.

Jevta is involved with Education Generation, an organization committed to youth empowerment through education, and is heavily involved in the SFU community through the Business Administration Student Society, Student Marketing Association, SFU Orientation Program and the Business Mentorship Program.

Jessalynn Tran, Richmond

Kwantlen Polytechnic University student Jessalynn Tran will be attending the University of Creative Arts in the UK for five months beginning in September. A Graphic Design for Marketing student, she plans to study in the UK to take advantage of the country’s leadership in the design realm. To further her goal of becoming a creative director, she plans to place special emphasis on studying concept development. Jessalynn’s past travel experience includes volunteering on humanitarian projects in rural villages of Peru, Laos, and Nigeria. She has also traveled across Europe, South East Asia and Africa.

At home, Jessalynn volunteers at a crisis line and is an active member of the Global Perspectives Alumni Program. She has organized many fundraising activities in the community (pub nights, silent auctions, raffles) and was the Marketing Executive for the Accounting Society of Kwantlen, responsible for the marketing and promotion of the club and graphic design work for posters and advertisements.
