Message from the Chair

The Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society was created to expand educational opportunities available to students throughout the province. It offers programs that support transfers from college to university to complete a degree, pursuit of advanced education by aboriginal individuals, and, international study.

Education is the foundation of a productive, democratic, and civil society. Our investment in the knowledge and skills of British Columbia’s students is an investment that benefits our society and thus benefits all British Columbians.

The economic downturn and its impact on investment markets had a substantial impact on our endowments and on those of other foundations. Consequently, our capacity to provide scholarships has been temporarily impaired. However, as a result of a generous pledge by Dr. Irving K. Barber, in 2010 the Society will be able to distribute up to 85 transfer scholarships of $5,000 each. As well, for 2010, we will be awarding $20,000 for a One World Premier’s Scholarship, and a grant from the Government of British Columbia has provided $250,000 for awards to aboriginal students.

As the new board chair I look forward to working with the other board members who are all dedicated to supporting the students of British Columbia through awards and scholarships.
